The decision for a Muslim woman who was to be caned for drinking beer:

From the article: "Malaysia follows a dual-track justice system. Shariah laws apply to Muslims in all personal matters.
Non-Muslims — Chinese, Indians, Sikhs and other minorities — are covered by civil laws and are free to drink."
This one talks about corruption in the Malaysian society:

I know that corruption exists everywhere. However, in Malaysia it has gotten so bad that I walk into nearly every situation assuming that someone is going to take advantage of me. (Even my air conditioner repair man tried to get an extra RM10 from me this week. Only after I looked at him with a confused look on my face, did he drop the price to what it was supposed to be.) I believe that it has created a society where each person is only watching out for himself. Then, people don't think about how their actions affect anyone else. I will drive how I want, park where I want, and cut in front of you Miss pregnant woman. Granted, we are all sinful and this attitude is everywhere .. it just seems to be amplified here.
